当作为形容词或是代名词的时候（也有作为连词的情况），“both”常在科学论文写作中被误用。

最常见的情况是：将“both”错误的用来表示两者间的“关联”（可以想见这是由人们把“两”等同于“both”这个通常想法所引起的）。

事实上，“both”虽然也可用来指二者的综合，但并不具有“表示二者间的关联”这一作用。下面就将列举该词语的一些典型误用和正确用法。

[误] Both experiments yielded consistent results.
[正] These (two) experiments yielded consistent results.
[正] The results of these (two) experiments are consistent.

[误] There is a difference between the responses for both treatments.
[正] There is a difference between the responses of the two treatments.
[正] The responses of these (two) treatments differ.

[误] Both functions have the same asymptotic form.
[正] These (two) functions have the same asymptotic form.
[正] The asymptotic forms of the (two) functions are identical.

上述例句中，作者意图使用“both”来叙述两者间（已明确）的关联，这里的“both”仅仅只是把作者想要叙述的（experiments、treatments、functions）简单综合在一起做一个说明，实际上表现出来的却和作者意图叙述的无关，而是“已明确”的两者同“还未明确”的其他事物之间的关联。

比如第一个例句中，“both experiments”并非表示所指的两项实验的结果相互一致，而是这两项实验同其他（还未明确）实验的结果或理论相一致的情况。
